Knowledge management simplifies terminology maintenance

What is the difference between "test sequence" and "test run"? None? Then why were two different terms used for the same concept in two different software programs of a company? It is not just technical writers who are confronted at work every day with different terms for the same concept; product managers, developers, translators and ultimately even the customers face this constantly. Many companies are aware of this problem and seek a solution to the problem through a terminology database. But is this enough?

Knowledge management simplifies terminology maintenance

Terminology databases are meant for capturing the vocabulary pertaining to a technical field in one or more languages. Terminology extraction methods are used to extract the terms. The terms are processed according to the criteria applicable to terminology and saved in the database. The approved terms will be available to the users, mostly through a web interface. Saving the concepts, their meaning and additional information in the database however does not mean that different terms for the same concept will cease to appear henceforth in the various documents.

No doubt that a well maintained terminology database contributes immensely towards a standardized corporate terminology. This in itself does not yet guarantee success, which means acceptance and the reputation as a reliable corporate source. New terms are generated every day.
