Designing descriptive pictograms

They are easy to recognize and don’t require translation: Pictograms, symbols and icons. Although simple, they possess a number of special features. Technical writers desiring to develop their own pictograms must take note of these and conduct prior testing.

The wish for a universal language across cultures and national boundaries has never been as pronounced and urgent as today. People of different origin and language must communicate with each other due to worldwide interdependence in many areas.

Industrial organizations have long been developing and manufacturing not just for the local but also for the global market. Therefore, the technical documentation too must reach every customer in the world, regardless of the language he or she speaks. However, translation into all the languages in the world is a great challenge logistically as well as with regards to time and cost.
