Packing in numbers, data and facts into well-structured texts is routine for technical writers. Supporting product managers or conducting trainings or lectures, however, is usually not part of their tasks. But with just a few tricks it is easy to make appealing presentations.

“When one person is speaking, the others must listen – that is your opportunity! Misuse it!” This quote comes from Kurt Tucholsky, and you should think of these lines when your superior stands before you and says: “Please take up the next training.” Use the opportunity even if at that very moment you would prefer the ground to open up and swallow you. This also applies when your product manager suddenly comes to your desk and wants to design a seminar with you.

The target audience and their expectations

Teaching or giving a talk is different from routine writing work, but there are commonalities: Professors as well as technical writers are experts in their field with substantial knowledge and take care of their respective target audience. While speakers speak in front of the public, technical writers address different users with their written information.
