Women, men and technology

Men and women deal differently with technology and need information that is tailored specifically to their requirements. This has certain consequences for technical communications.

For product development and marketing, companies are focusing more and more on gender-specific needs of men and women. Targeted product adaptations should help cultivate new market segments and increase turnovers. Technical communication has so far not been taking research and discussions on gender-specific requirements into consideration. Although studies are generally done on both genders, the gender aspect is either not evaluated at all or is only lightly touched along with other factors. Accordingly, we do not find tips for a gender-specific design of instruction manuals, whether in literature on technical communication or in industry-specific standards.

If we, however, take a look at the preconditions and attitude that women and men bring along when reading instruction manuals, it becomes clear that a number of gender-specific differences exist. The very approach of designing ...
